Frequently Asked Questions
What physical condition do I need to be in?
Almost anyone in basic physical condition can backpack. One way to insure a pleasurable experience is to train before your trip. Get used to carrying a backpack with a little extra weight on walks or hikes and slowly increase the weight as your trip gets closer. Remember that we are thinking of your enjoyment, so we always go at a pace that suits your needs, take ample rest breaks to enjoy the views, take photos, learn about wildflowers and geology, and keep hydrated and energized.
How much will my pack weigh?
On most two to three day trips, the average pack weight is about 30-35 pounds, slightly more for longer trips. You will carry your sleeping bag and pad, tent, clothing, personal items, water, and some group gear and food. We'll help you keep your pack light by supplying light equipment. Our new Mountain Hardware tents are some of the lightest and strongest on the market, weighing in at just 3 pounds for a two-person tent! We'll also help you with your gear selection to insure that you carry only what you need.
What about bears?
Bears, both black and grizzly, are a part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem that extends from western Wyoming to eastern Idaho and southwestern Montana. Grizzly bears are most commonly found in Yellowstone National Park and the northern reaches of Grand Teton National Park. The areas in which we backpack lie further south, where black bears are seen but grizzlies are rarely sighted. Because we hike and camp in bear habitat, we take all of the necessary precautions: we hang our food out of the bears' reach, we never eat or cook where we sleep, we keep a clean camp, we always make noise on the trail so not to startle a bear and we carry pepper spray in the event of an interaction.
Whats the food like?
We provide tasty, nutritious meals that dont weigh too much to carry, spoil easily, or attract animals. Typical breakfasts on the trail are hot and cold cereals with dried fruits and nuts, lunches are generally cheese, dried meats, bagels and spreads, and dinners are hearty meals like pastas, beans and rice, soups, hot drinks and dessert. We cook all of our food and add fresh produce, fruits and veggies.
What equipment do I need?
We supply your backpack, sleeping bag, pad, and tent. You need to have a sturdy pair of hiking shoes, good wool/synthetic socks, a rain jacket and pants and synthetic or wool insulating layers, including a hat and gloves. We can assist you with clothing selection and advice. We send all of our clients a detailed equipment list so that you have ample time to prepare and don't purchase needless items.
What is the temperature and weather like in the Teton Mountains during the summer?
Weather can change momentarily in the high mountains and can be variable throughout the summer. It can snow at any time of the year, so we are always prepared with warm clothing. Generally most days begin sunny with cool mornings (in the low 40s) changing to warm afternoons (in the high 70s or 80s) in August. Frequently afternoon thunderclouds form and rain may fall, clearing out to starry skies and clear evenings that can dip down into the high 30s depending on the time of the summer. We supply 0 degree Mountain Hardware sleeping bags and sturdy ground pads to insure you of a warm nights sleep and comfort in the mountains.
Why should I do this?
Because its good for your soul! Hiking is a healthy and fun way to help you get in shape and spend quality time with your family and friends. Experiencing nature and peaceful, wild places enriches our lives. It will provide you with lasting memories of a unique experience in the great outdoors.
